Silly But True? How Business Trips Can Save You Money!
My fiance left this week for a two week trip to Amsterdam for business. I've thought about this and have convinced myself that this will save us money. Her business trip is one that will require her to work long hours and leave little room for doing tourist type things. So here is my list of expenses we will save while she is gone:
- Her daily gas money to drive to work.
- At least 3 dinners we would have gone out to if she was here.
- Any food she would eat at home.
- Food not eaten by me as I officially switch in to bachelor mode and survive on tuna fish and mac n' cheese.
- Any lunch she would buy while at work.
- Since we make any big purchases as a team, we have a zero percent chance of buying any furniture, or other one-time type items.
That's all I can think of right now. So we aren't going to break the bank with these savings.....but I think we will spend less.
Any thoughts from anyone whether business trips save money?

=) I actually did the same math last year. It DOES save you money for the duration of the trip, you just have to be careful not to overspend on clothing prior to the trip [my problem area because I have a very basic, non business wardrobe and have to pack days and nights of nice dressy outfits].
No transportation costs, no food costs, lower utilities because only one person uses lights, water and water.
Lower cost on either a/c or heat if you're like me and refuse to heat the whole place for just one person.
My trips are all expenses paid so I don't use my supply of staples at home, I just buy a few basic things so that I don't have to lug it. So I usually end up adding to my existing supplies.
And lastly: Experience bonus!
Sometimes we get treated to baseball games or shows or tours on the office, so that's one tourist experience I don't have to pay for later on if it was average.
And I get my fill of room service or whatever unnecessary frills the hotels offer that I would never want to pay for because they really are luxuries.
The way you describe it, makes it sound like my fiance is having a better time then she is saying! :)
Hm ... it's possible ... ;)
I think that it's a tossup - my office will "treat" us to certain things like room service/hotel frills and all that, but they don't allow us to take any vacation days at the end of the trips like some companies will. So she might be able to have you come along at the tail end and extend the trip into a vacation at some point, but we definitely would not be allowed to.
